The Charlotte Green Initiative Committee will be meeting Friday, October 9th at 11:00 am in Facilities Management 119. The meeting is, as always, open to the public.

The committee will be planning for the upcoming annual Open Forum, discussing member web access, setting committee goals, and beginning first steps in negotiating 2008-2009 projects with campus officials.

First Committee Meeting of the 2009-2010 Academic Year Is September 25th at 12:00 pm in FM 119

The Charlotte Green Initiative Committee will be meeting Friday, September 25th at 12:00 noon in Facilities Management 119. The meeting is, as always, open to the public.

The committee will begin our visioning for the upcoming year, set some preliminary goals, elect leadership positions, and set a meeting time for the semester.

Final Committee Meeting of the Year Is April 16th at 4:00 pm in FM 119

The Charlotte Green Initiative will be having our last meeting of the semester this Thursday, April 23rd at 4:00 pm in Facilities Management 119. We’ll be wrapping up the semester & year, discussing next year’s goals, and talking briefly about our allocation decision. As always, the meeting is open to the public.

We are also pleased to announce the Charlotte Green Initiative’s allocation decision for 2008-2009 funds.

We have chosen to fund two projects:

1. A solar photovoltaic power station connected directly to the area power grid. Designed entirely by students, the station will be approximately 12 feet tall and will be constructed on the side of Storrs. It will employ photovoltaic units already on campus but currently not in use.

2. A greenscreen, which consists of a lattice to aid plant growth on freestanding walls or the sides of a building. Greenscreens are highly pedestrian interactive and have the potential to decrease the cooling loads of buildings. We are hoping to construct one in the Lynch/Laurel Courtyard.

Our goals in choosing these projects were to allow UNC Charlotte to increase energy efficiency, generate renewable energy on-site, create a pedestrian-interactive/community-centered approach to sustainability, open up conduits for student research and professional development, and hopefully generate revenue for the university.

Although we will be funding these projects, the specifications (including size & location) are subject to change as we begin negotiations with university administration during the summer. Groundbreaking is slated for sometime before December.

The committee will be making our decision for the 2008-2009 funding cycle.

We will be choosing from the following projects:
1. solar power using existing photovoltaic units
2. greenscreen technology
3. energy metering dashboard display(s)
